Waterproofing Membranes Used With Asphalt Roofing Shingles
The
asphalt shingles (just like any other shingles) do not provide perfect water insulation when used on low-slope roofs. To chieve the 100% waterproof solution. The waterproofing membranes should be used prior to laying the shingles.
Waterproofing bitumenous membranes
The most frequently used are the hot bituminous sheets and the self adhesive waterproofing sheets. Both (either one or the other) must be used (or at least should be considered) in following cases:
- if the asphalt shingles are used on roofs with slope which is lower than the minimum slope recommended by the shingles manufacturer;
- in the places where we can expect that the rain water or snow will accumulate;
- in all rain-rich or snow-rich geographic locations.
The asphalt shingles are then applied right on the waterproofing membrane. The hot asphalt membranes must be heated first to the working temperature, usually 150 - 180 Celsius degrees, the self adhesive materials do not need any heating.
The asphalt shingles installation
The sphalt shingles are then mechanically fastened (
nail, wire fastener).
To reach the required roofing properties it is necessary to use the quality fastening material, with appropriate shape and head profile.
They must fix the asphalt shingles safe enough to survive the usual winds and storms and the material the nails are produced from and its surface treatment must provide durability comparable with durability of the asphalt shingles. When choosing the fastening elements it is also necessary to know what material was used for framing.
