Snowgrip, The Metal Roof Coating With Built-in Snow Guards
SNOWGRIP is not a standard snow retention system. It is the first snow retention roof coating. A metal roof coating with thousands of integrated micro snow guards. Am I joking? No, not at all!

Why snow slides down the roof and how do the snow guards work
Actually, the task of the snow guard (or snow bracket) is very simple. To keep the snow on the roof as long as possible.
Icy snow blocks falling from the roof represent a serious danger for people and their properties. Did you wish a 1 meter hole in your carīs roof for Christmas? No problem for a 300 kgs ice block fallen from a 3 story house!
In winter, the inner space of the house is warmer than the exterior.
If there is the snow on the roof, the warmth coming up through the roof melts the bottom layer of the snow pack turning the wet roof in a slide. Due to low exterior temperature the wet bottom of the snow pack re-freezes. And you know what happens if you put an ice block on the wet slide...
The snow guards try to avoid the snow blocks sliding by pinning through the snow and so holding all layers of the snow. The bottom of the snow pack will repeatedly melt and re-freeze around the snow guards which will keep it on the roof safely but still sometimes the retained snow may leave the roof in smaller but still hazardous pieces before it melts completely.
How SNOWGRIP works and why snow stays on the roof
SNOWGRIP consists of two components.
The first one is a high quality liquid rubber coating applied over the entire surface of a clean dry metal roof.
While the base coat is still wet, special abrasive aggregate granules are uniformly broadcast over and settle into the base coat.
As the base coat cures, it bonds to the metal roof surface and secures the abrasive aggregate granules in a position that protrude from the surface of the cured rubber base coat.
Also in this case the bottom of the snow pack will melt due to higher temperature of the roof surface. Anyway, the granules will act like the ice climbing crampons and hold the snow pack on the roof unless it melts completely. The producer states that it creates a safe drainage way under the snow pack to carry melt water safely off the roof.
A step towards cool roof
A roof treated with SNOWGRIP cannot be considered a real COOL ROOF (unless it becomes a CRRS rated coating, of course).
However, the surface of the coating is very compact and the product is offered in several colors that reflect the sunlight very well so I am sure that SNOWGRIP can also significantly reduce the solar heating of the house in the summer.
