Sbs Modified Bitumen Roofing
SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene) is a synthetic thermoplastic rubber. SBS modified bitumens first appeared in early 70s.
How much SBS is in an SBS modified roofing?
In a standard SBS modified bitumens, there is 8 - 22 per cent of SBS.
Advantages of an SBS bitumen roofing
- Can be laid and welded at low temperatures;
- The whole back of the roll can be made adhesive;
- Hot air welding allowed, no flame necessary;
- Compatible with oxidized asphalts so both can be combined (even though I wouldnīt recommend it);
- Asphalt modified with SBS is elastic - therefore this kind of roofing will have no problems (will not tear) with dilatation ;
Disadvantages of SBS modified roofing
- SBS modified bitumens are not UV-resistant (ultra violet radiation disintegrates it) surface treatment (gravel) is necessary;
- Also they are not as hard as APP modified bitumens, strong hails, stones or tree limbs can puncture it.
