Roof Windows Position And Dimensions
Vertical positioning of the roof windows
To achieve the richest view and illumination level, the bottom of the window shall not be higher than the hight of a person sitting in the chair (means some 90 cm or 3 ft).
For the same reason the top of the skylight window should not be lower than some 180 cm or 6 ft. Another criterium is that all the controls (knobs, handles, bars) have to be reachable without any problems, even for the sitting person (remember the older members of your families).
At the same time, for the safety reasons, the controls like handles and knobs that can open the window should be out of your childīs reach.
Top or bottom handles
When choosing the particular design of the roof window have on your mind the comfort of the manipulation.
For the roofs with lower pitches and the swing windows it is recommended to use the handle placed at the top of the window, the opening is much easier if you pull it down instead of pushing it up. Also, you can place the desk right under the window without blocking it.
With steeper pitches it is more reasonable to have the handle placed in the bottom part of the window as you can reach it better.
Horizontal positioning of the roof windows
The horizontal position and dimensions of your roof window depends fully on your
roof framing.
Even though you can cut easily new opening in one or two of your roof beams without influencing the stability of the building, it requires some planning and works.
