Roof Leaking Around Nail Holes
Sometimes it happens that roof covered with asphalt roofing shingles starts to leak and after attic inspection you find out the problematic parts are the
nail holes.
And sometimes the roof leaks around the nail holes in steel flashing...
How to repair leaking nail holes
- Caulk all nails (that means the nail head and a space of 1 sqare inch around the nail head) in the leaking area of the roof with roofing cement;
- If the nail heads are rusty you must replace all affected shingles;
- Shingles also must be replaced with new ones if there are any cracks around the nails or if the nail head went through the
asphalt shingle (nail partially or wholly punctured the shingle);
- Such repaired roof must be "monitored". At least once a year inspect the roof to find out whether the caulk is not deteriorated or if another portion of the roof is not affected too.
