Reasons Of Asphalt Shingle Failures
Basically, there are 3 groups of reasons why the
asphalt shingles fail.
Low-quality material, asphalt shingle defects
The most important material defects are as follows:
- missing or insufficiently adhesive thermo (self-adhesive) spots/stripes;
- low-end bitumens used (low temperature stability, low melting point, low UV - ultraviolet radiation - resistance);
- non-acceptable physical parameters, like e.g. too high absorptiveness, low shape-stability, high weight;
Failures caused by wrong roof composition
- high sheathing humidity;
- non-flat underlayment;
- wrong dimensions or distances between rafters, beams, etc...;
- no underlay felt in places where it is required for additional waterproofing (valleys, low slopes, overhangs);
- insufficient insulation or venting of the roof surfaces;
Failures caused by improper roofing installation
- wrong measurements;
- wrong fasteners (or badly chosen mechanical fastening points);
- overestimating thermo-spots adhesiveness;
- installation during too cold or too hot days;
- poorly designed "contact points" where asphalt shingles meet other materials (gutters, flashings, vents, antennas, lightning rods, etc...).
