Mineral Insulation Granules, Mineral Insulation Granulate
Insulation granulate consists of anorganic insulation materials in the form of granules. For roof insulation purposes we usually use peat, perlite or vermiculite granules.
Peat (in Europe called also Liapor)
Peat (Liapor) is made of expanded clay and therefor has the same properties as any ceramic material (sustainable, good thermo-insulating properties and very heavy - the weight of such insulation ranges from 500 to 1800 kg/cubic meter). As the peat grains do not absorbe water they are also frost-resistant.
Perlite
Perlite is the vulcanic mineral. In the process of perlite insulation granules production, the perlite minerals are ground into the form of powder then heated to 1000+ Celsius degrees when the water that the mineral naturally contains vapourizes and sublimes. The material heaves (grows in volume approx 15 - 20 times). As in its natural form, perlite is able to absorb the water, to achive the waterproof insulation material it is necessary to treat it with silicone or asphalt (hydrophobisation).
Vermiculite
The production process and properties of vermiculite are similar to those of perlite. The main compound of vermiculite is ground slate. For insulation purposes, it is used in the form of loose grains for gritting the construction boards.
