Choosing The Best Roofing Based On The Altitude
As I mentioned already, there are maybe 3 or 4 most important factors influencing the roofing material to be chosen. They are as follows:
1.) climatic conditions;
2.) chemical composition of the air;
3.) the minimum roof slope, and
4.) the altitude of your location.
The mountain country has tougher climate than the low-altitude locations. Therefor the requirements on roofing in the mountains are different than the requierements on roofing in the flatland.
Ceramic tile roofing in the mountains
In the mountains I would not recommend the non-flat ceramic tile roofing (I mean the burnt clay tiles with dewatering grooves) and also the other types of the ceramic roofings are not very recommended for the mountains.
Rubber or plastic shingles also do not work very properly in higher altitudes, they get very fragile with low temperature and the standard ones were not designed to survive the regular hail storms.
The best mountain roofing material
So what roofing material I do recommend for the extreme mountain conditions? You know the answer, donīt you? For sure, you will not spoil anything using the slate roofing.
Also the metal roofing works well but do not forget the protective varnishing. Apart from this it requires virtually no maintenance.
Cedar shingles? Yes! If you can pay them, use them, they are one of the best and most natural roofing types for your mountain home.
