The asphalt shingle roof

Very similar to any other shingled roof, the asphalt shingle roof consists of overlapping small surface plain parts made of asphalt insulation sheets.

Asphalt shingles are available in almost any color. It is up to you to choose the one that suits your house the most.

The water is drained down/away off the roof as the asphalt shingles are being installed under certain slope. If there was just the hydrostatic pressure (no pitch), the asphalt shingles would let the water through (asphalt shingles are not suitable for low slope or flat roofs as they would very probably sink).

The asphalt insulation sheets

used for asphalt shingles usualy are of AP-S type or modified asphalt AP-SM with some surface treatment - mineral sands that protect the asphalt hydro-insulation layer from the ultra-violet radiation, fire or mechanical damage.Sands can be pigmented so the asphalt shingles are available in many natural colors.

The asphalt shingle roofing installation

The asphalt shingle roofing segments are manufactured in two basic dimensions - the European 33,3 cm x 100 cm or American 31,1 cm x 91,5 cm. In the upper part of the asphalt shingle there is usually a self-adhesive stripe that helps to stick the asphalt shingles one to another. Asphalt shingles can be applied onto wood sheathing with planks width of 8 - 14 cm minimum 2,5 cm thick or on the large waterproof plywood boards or OSB boards. Asphalt shingles are hammered with 2,5 mm rust-proof (aluminum or galvanized steel) nails with larger head (10 mm) and size of minimum 25 mm. One segment has to be fastened with at least 4 nails (roof pitch up to 60 degrees) or 6 nails )roof slopes over 60 degrees). To activate the self adhesive stripe it is better to lay this type of roofing in the summer as higher temepartures help to activate the glue faster.

Asphalt roofing patterns can be used with the minimum roof pitch of 15 degrees (3.25/12).
